+MYTHS,FACTS & SIGNS OF CHILD ABUSE+
Child sexual assault has become more and more of a problem in this country.
We need to know the warning signs and see how it happens before we can stop it.
As a parent you need to be informed and aware.
First there are many myths about this problem.
The facts come from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
NCMEC http://www.missingkids.com
MYTH: Family sexual abuse is an isolated, one time incident.
FACT: For most victims, the abuse continues for years. In most cases the offender will not stop until the abuse is reported to an outside agency.
MYTH: Children provoke sexual abuse by their seductive behavior.
FACT: Seductive behavior is not the cause. Responsibility for the act lies with the offender.
MYTH: If children do not want it they can say STOP!
FACT: Children generally do not question the behavior of adults. They are often coerced by bribes, threats, and the use of a position of authority. Studies indicate that most child sexual abuse continues for 2 years before it is reported.
MYTH: All sexual abuse victims are girls.
FACT: Studies show 25% of females under the age of 18, and 10 to 15% of males under the age of 18, are victims.
MYTH: Child sexual abuse occurs only among strangers. If children stay away from strangers they will not be victims.
FACT: National statistics indicate that 85% of the cases the offender is known to the victims. He/She is usually a friend, relative, family member, babysitter, or older friend of the child.
MYTH: Family sexual abuse only happens in low income families.
FACT: Family sexual abuse crosses all classes of society. There is no race, social, or economic class that is immune to family abuse.
SIGNS OF CHILD ABUSE
Children get scratches, bruises, and cuts from time to time. That's the nature of childhood - a time that's full of tumbling, climbing, and adventures. That makes it difficult to tell what's normal and what may be a sign of abuse. Unfortunately, there's no one telltale sign that a child is being abused. Bruises, black eyes, and broken bones are certainly clues, but other signs are less obvious. Children who have been abused may behave differently. They may have nightmares or trouble sleeping. Their school performance may suddenly decline. In addition, they may:
*have a poor self-image
*be unable to love or trust others
*be aggressive or disruptive (become bullies)
*display intense anger or rage
*act out in the classroom
*act out sexually
*be self-destructive, self-abusive, or suicidal
*feel sad, passive, withdrawn, or depressed
*have difficulty forming new relationships
*use drugs or alcohol
*avoid going home after school
*show a fear of certain adults
SIGNS OF SEXUAL ABUSE
There are various lists of possible physical and behavioral indicators of child sexual abuse, some of which are:
*Waking up during the night sweating, screaming or shaking with nightmares.
*Masturbating excessively
*Showing unusually aggressive behavior toward family members, friends, toys, and pets
*Complaining of pain while urinating or having a bowel movement, or exhibiting symptoms of genital infections such as offensive odors, or symptoms of a sexually transmitted disease
*Having symptoms indicating evidence of physical traumas to the genital or anal area.
*Experiencing a loss of appetite or other eating problems, including unexplained gagging
*Showing unusual fear of a certain place or location
*Developing frequent unexplained health problems
*Engaging in persistent sexual play with friends, toys or pets
*Having unexplained periods of panic, which may be flashbacks from the abuse
*Regressing to behaviors too young for the stage of development they already achieved
*Initiating sophisticated sexual behaviors
*Indicating a sudden reluctance to be alone with a certain person
*Engaging in self-mutilations, such as sticking themselves with pins or cutting themselves

Synopsis-
Lacy Dawn is a true daughter of Appalachia, and then some. She lives in a hollow with her mom, Jenny, her war-damaged dad, Dwayne, and her mutt Brownie, a dog who's remarkably skilled at laying fiber-optic cable. Lacy Dawn's android boyfriend, DotCom, has come to the hollow with a mission: not to mend Dwayne, though he does, nor tutor Lacy Dawn, though he does that too. No -- armed with advertising videos of proto-humanoids from millennia ago, he has been sent to Earth by the Manager of the Mall. He must recruit Lacy Dawn to save the planet, and help her with a boatload of shopping at the mall along the way.
Half science fiction, half social commentary, and a third half satire, Rarity from the Hollow is a rare mixture of humor and wry observation woven into a quirky and unexpected SF tale. If Marvin the Android wanted to read a book about a colleague who'd risen to the top of their profession, Rarity from the Hollow would be it.
